Early Childhood Yoga – Crawling to 4 years - Breathing Space

Early Childhood Yoga – Crawling through 4 years

Yoga helps babies, toddlers, and preschoolers explore movement milestones, gain confidence, build strength and fitness, learn a tool for self-regulation, connect with parents and caregivers, and set the foundation for healthy body attitudes and a fit lifestyle. Breathing Space baby, tot, and preschool classes feature a mix age-appropriate yoga poses, songs, stories and games.

We focus on:

  • moving and having fun,
  • exercises that enhance
    • coordination,
    • strength
    • and good posture,
  • brain-boosting activities, including connecting movements to words and music,
  • breath awareness, and
  • relaxation.

These parent-child classes are engaging and fun, encouraging each child to embrace their own unique expression of yoga poses while supporting their development and growth (Nannies, grandparents, and other caregivers welcome too).

Class Descriptions & Age Ranges

Tot Yoga (crawling – 24 mo)

Parents and children playfully move together through poses, songs, and activities appropriate for crawlers and walkers.

Little Family Yoga (21 mo – 4 yrs)

Yoga can help toddlers and preschoolers learn how to relieve frustration, improve motor skills, and increase attention span by actively following directions.

We incorporate imagination, songs, words and stories and age-appropriate postures and activities to support your preschooler’s growth and development while creating an enriching family activity.

“[Yoga] class is without question a highlight of our week…Our daughter was seven months when we started, and she has only grown more and more interested and engaged each week.  Jen creates a warm environment for babies to play and learn, consistently introducing new concepts, exercises and experiences that make every session different.  She also welcomes both parents to participate, and it has become a wonderful way for us to start our weekend together as a family.”

– Caroline, Tot Yoga parent

Jen has done an amazing job making yoga fun and accessible to toddlers and preschoolers. She takes the extroverts bouncing off the ceiling and the shy ones under grownups legs and manages to engage them all every class. Each class involves adventures to exciting locations, a menagerie of animal poses and a soothing “yoga rest” with bubbles.
- Danielle, Little Family Yoga parent

These classes have been so much fun! This morning my 2 yo even got her own mat ready and showed my mother where to start. She loves seeing her teacher and friends on the screen and has gotten really engaged in the activities.

My 14-month-old has been enrolled in the weekly Tot Yoga classes with Breathing Space and we are really enjoying them! She loves getting to see the other fellow tots on the screen, plus the chance to do some weekly yoga play with Mama . . . It’s fun to watch my little one glance back and forth from Jen on the screen to Mama in the room, and then either mimic us then and there, or file it away to bust out later on her own time.

Early Childhood Yoga Frequently Asked Questions

Our Tot Yoga (crawling-24 months) and Little Family Yoga (21 months-4 yrs) have a 3 month age overlap on purpose. Personality, more than physical development, should be the deciding factor between the two classes.

tot yoga circle timeTot Yoga tends to be a quieter class with more repetition from week to week, so suits more reserved toddlers better.

Little Family Yoga tends to be louder and move move more quickly from activity to activity to suit the energy level of 2-4 yr olds. Little Family Yoga requires more verbal direction following, incorporates more imaginative play, and typically involves less physical helping from parents. Very active almost-2 year olds often do well in this class because the social environment challenges them more than that of the younger group. Younger siblings accustomed to the energy and speed of older toddlers and preschoolers tend to enjoy this class as well, even if they are not able to do every pose.

Toddler Family Yoga (walking-4 yrs) is a crossover class which is very much like Little Family Yoga with some adaptations 12-21 month old students.

Baby Yoga & Play classes, for newborn to pre-crawling babies and their grownup(s), contains dozens of yoga-inspired movements, postures, songs, rhymes and activities designed to support baby’s development. Each class is filled with calming, nurturing ways to enhance bonding, soothe the inevitable cranky moments, and improve baby’s sleep.

Baby & Me Yoga ClassBabies participate while on their backs, tummies, or held in loving arms. For grownups, this class is a special opportunity to meet other parents and caregivers, get support, and learn about baby’s emerging personality.

Grownups will also get to do a bit of postpartum-appropriate yoga themselves, including strength- and flexibility-building postures, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques to address common physical complaints and mental/emotional stressors during the new-parent period.

Breathing Space Baby Yoga & Play series also incorporates developmental topics and time for parent-to-parent support during class. Our hope is that the community built in yoga will carry over into friendships and playdates off the mat.

Most appropriate from 6-weeks until baby is mobile. Moms, dads, grandparents or other caregivers welcome. No previous yoga experience necessary; be prepared/dressed for movement.

Jen chose to become certified in Baby Signing Time because the program has a reputation for quality.

Baby Signing Time instructors teach American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary, not made up signs. Baby Signing Time makes it easy for parents and children to learn sign language.

As a parent, you do not need to become fluent in sign language, even learning a few signs like ‘milk’, ‘juice’ and ‘more’ can be helpful. Parents may choose to purchase an optional digital video subscription for home practice.

Babies crawl before they walk, and sign before they talk! When a baby waves “bye-bye” or points at what she wants, she is signing! It is natural for babies to communicate with signs. Baby Signing Time gives babies the signs they need to express their needs and wants.

Baby Signing Time Logo

Most children begin to communicate through speech at 15-18 months of age. With the use of sign language, families are now developing closer bonds with their children as they begin to communicate as early as 8-12 months of age!
